Celebrate Flagstaff, a festival of food, music, dance & life stories (September 20-28) was our major event in 1997.
ONGOING ACTIVITIES
In addition to the daily events, there were two ongoing activities. One was building a community quilt. The logo for the Festival served as the centerpiece of the quilt. The making of the quilt was a sharing of heritages. It made tangible the cultural legacies that represent the cultural mosaic of people in the Flagstaff area.
Internationally known Flagstaff artist Darcy Falk was the facilitator for the quilt. CCDR presented the quilt to Mayor Christopher Bavasi as a gift to the City of Flagstaff. It was hung in the lobby of the Flagstaff City Hall.
FOLK ARTISTS
Funded by the Arizona Commission on the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts, folklorists Keith and Kathy Cunningham searched out folk artists and crafts people to present them to Flagstaff schools, to the street fair, and to our community storytelling during the week.
STREET FAIR
Celebrate Flagstaff began with a street fair co-produced by CCDR, Flagstaff Live!, Mainstreet Foundation, KFLXFM, The Eagle, and the Southside Merchants. That fair featured local groups from various traditions such as Hopi, Navajo, Irish, and Middle Eastern to share their dances, songs, and food.
CLOSING CEREMONIES
The festival concluded after eight days with a potluck and closing ceremonies at Cogdill Community Center. Co-sponsored by the cultural Unity People, this was a time and place to reflect on our shared heritage.
